Did you ever think a college tour could be so exciting? For me, being it's my first time on the college tour, it became an anxious experience. I woke up today to find a open eyed vision to my future as an adult. While visiting the first two colleges, Temple University in Philidelphia and Howard University in Washington DC, I've realized that these colleges are made for us. We, as students who are educated, need to take advantage. As I learned about the founders of both of these schools, I learned they made these colleges for a strong reason. The founder of Temple University, Russel Conwell, founded Temple for people who couldn't or were unable to attend school during the day. He made it convenient for people with jobs in the day time to still be able to succeed with a higher education. The founder at Howard, General Howard, founded this school for African Americans during the Reconstruction period. So General Howard did make a way for African Americans, although they were being discriminated and treated as animals when trying to get there education. Hopefully, in closing, the young women of the college tour by the end of our 5 day journey, will have the knowledge that what they are learning in probably a Ms.Harris or a Ms. Blaize class really does make a difference, and it is just what might change the world.
So far in our tour, we went to Howard University and Temple University. At Temple University, I learned that there are 3 million books in their library. I also learned that they buried their founder in one of their gardens, and they made a statue of his head and put WiFi in his brain. The closer you get towards his brain, the stronger your signal is. Temple's founder was Russell Conwell in 1884. The reason why it was founded was because some people could not go to school during the day, so they made it a night school. Some of Temple's majors are business and medicine.
At Howard, I found a lot of things out like that P. Diddy went to that school and a lot of my middle school teachers went there also. Howard was founded by General Howard in 1867. The reason why it was founded was so that former slaves could go to school. Howard is a private school. I also wanted to know if these two colleges have the classes I need or want. The reason why I like this school is because I can choose my own classes.
Going on this college tour is very different for me. I've never been away from home, besides going to Puerto Rico with my sisters. I think that the college tour will make a big impact on the way I think of things. So far, I think that the schools we've visited have helped me notice more things. I think that the future colleges we are going to on the college tour are going to help me push myself to achieve more.
I think that going to Temple and Howard University would be very good colleges to go to. I would go to Temple or Howard University to study for my major in Technology/Engineering. What I've learned about Temple University was very interesting. I learned that there is more than just going to class in college. You get to have a study time. I learned that there is more than just one place to go to have a study session. There could be the library, outside, in the lunch room, or just in a tech lab. I would say that college would be a very good experience for me because it can help me push myself to do more. I would say that college would be a very good experience because of the many different things I can learn about.
In college, I think the things I would go for are business, engineering, and architecture. I would say college is a good experience for doing something new to help better your life, and that is what I think of the college tour.
This College Tour So Far Has Been The Best! Everything is so exciting and cool. One thing that I have realized about the tour is that you don't really feel as tired when you're walking around the campus, because you are learning things and looking at new places and things around you. Howard University looks like its own little city because it's so big.
One cool fact about Temple University is that the Founder, Russel Conwell was buried with his wife in one of the gardens on campus, and they have this WiFi wire through his brain that, the closer you get to his brain, the more signal you get. This fact I find personally disturbing.
The writing we have to do during the tour may seem overwhelming, but for me it's the easiest thing, and once you're in the predicament of boredom, that's what you want to do to keep you from being extra bored.
I would recommend that you have one of your friends, or someone you know come on the college tour with you because if not, you will be lonely. Even though it's an educational trip, you still would want to have your bestie near you to be your buddy and your partner.
This college tour is very inspirational to young girls and boys, and I am grateful to have a parent that can afford to give me this opportunity. Alexis

Over the past six years, Ronald Edmond’s Learning Center has taken over three hundred girls ages 11-14, to tour and visit a number of historically black colleges and universities along the east coast. Evidence has shown that this tour, officially named the Ronald Edmonds Learning Center’s Annual Young Women’s College Tour, has made a dramatic, positive impact on the current academic performance, emotional maturity, and educational aspirations of participating students.
During their visits to these prestigious Black colleges and universities, students acquire first hand knowledge of the requirements and programs offered through each individual school.
The premise of RELC’s College tour is to expose our middle school students to the diversity of collegiate opportunities available to them after high school. Many of our guided tours are conducted by former Ronald Edmonds Learning Center students who were also participants in the R.E.L.C College Tours.
R.E.L.C. is looking forward to this year’s tour, however, due to the current economic streamlining of the New York City Department of Education, we are forced to secure funding from outside sources in order to accomplish this goal. In previous years, the trip had been partially sponsored by private donors and a number of our faculty members. One of the major expenses for the R.E.L.C Young Men and Young Women’s College Tour is the cost of the chartered buses, $10,000 per bus for five days for two drivers. This year, our goal is to raise $23,000 to cover the cost of two buses and other expenses such as daily meals ($1,950), 40 copies of Hill Harper’s inspirational book for boys and girls, Letters to a Young Sister and Letters to a Young Brother. Some donors elect to pay a portion of a student’s cost for the trip ($300). This was an excellent way for an individual to support a child without incurring a great financial burden.
We are actively seeking financial assistance. Your tax-deductible donation can be made payable to “R.E.L.C. Young Women’s College Tour” and send to the address below. Once again, this experience is poised to touch these students by sparking their potential, widening their aspirations and opening heir minds to the reality that they can attend college, and definitely succeed. We thank you in advance for your assistance.

The Young Men and Young Women's College Tour was created to open a doorway into the future for the young men and women of R.E.L.C. This annual tour has introduced our students to the multitude of collegiate opportunities available to them after high school. Many of the schools that are visited are part of the HBCU (Historically Black College and Universities) circuit, and have included Howard University, Hampton University, and Spelman College. In addition, students have toured Temple University, Harvard University, University of Virginia, Georgetown University, and Georgia Tech.
By starting in middle school, educators and parents are working in partnership to plant the seeds for our children's future.
