Over the past six years, Ronald Edmond’s Learning Center has taken over three hundred girls ages 11-14, to tour and visit a number of historically black colleges and universities along the east coast. Evidence has shown that this tour, officially named the Ronald Edmonds Learning Center’s Annual Young Women’s College Tour, has made a dramatic, positive impact on the current academic performance, emotional maturity, and educational aspirations of participating students.
During their visits to these prestigious Black colleges and universities, students acquire first hand knowledge of the requirements and programs offered through each individual school.
The premise of RELC’s College tour is to expose our middle school students to the diversity of collegiate opportunities available to them after high school. Many of our guided tours are conducted by former Ronald Edmonds Learning Center students who were also participants in the R.E.L.C College Tours.
- R.E.L.C. is looking forward to this year’s tour, however, due to the current economic streamlining of the New York City Department of Education, we are forced to secure funding from outside sources in order to accomplish this goal. In previous years, the trip had been partially sponsored by private donors and a number of our faculty members. One of the major expenses for the R.E.L.C Young Men and Young Women’s College Tour is the cost of the chartered buses, $10,000 per bus for five days for two drivers. This year, our goal is to raise $23,000 to cover the cost of two buses and other expenses such as daily meals ($1,950), 40 copies of Hill Harper’s inspirational book for boys and girls, Letters to a Young Sister and Letters to a Young Brother. Some donors elect to pay a portion of a student’s cost for the trip ($300). This was an excellent way for an individual to support a child without incurring a great financial burden.
- We are actively seeking financial assistance. Your tax-deductible donation can be made payable to “R.E.L.C. Young Women’s College Tour” and send to the address below. Once again, this experience is poised to touch these students by sparking their potential, widening their aspirations and opening heir minds to the reality that they can attend college, and definitely succeed. We thank you in advance for your assistance.
